Higher Education in India : Challenges and Possibilities

"Higher education has great importance for the social and economic development of the country. In its size and diversity, India has the largest higher education system in the world, next to China and United States. Before independence, access to higher education was very limited and enlitist, with enrolment of less than a million students in 500 colleges and 20 universities. Since then the number of universities, colleges and enrolments have tremendously increased over the years. However, this problem has various dimensions-policy issues and challenges to ensure equity in education in India.

This book focuses on the issues around our higher education like financing management including access, equity and relevance, reorientation of programmes by lying emphasis on values, ethos and quality of higher education together with the assessment of institutions and their accreditation. As the social problem around contemporary India is the result of a complex nexus between the factors of exclusion and inclusion rooted in the history, values and cultural ethos. The author in the book stresses to link the educational systems/levels, be it schooling or higher education with the `state' government mechanism and not with the private sector as its interference only leads to the commercialisation of education. A critical analysis is done on the historical denial of accessibility, inequality in resources allocation and inequality in education to Scs, Sts, Women and students with special needs. As education is afundamental right of all the citizens of India."
