"Shashi Deshpande is one such writer who has successfully explored each and every
layer of feminine consciousness; the silences, the ambiguities, the complexities, the
contradictions, recording her experiences in the context of socio-cultural and
psycho-philosophical perspectives. Rejecting the image of ideal mythical women, she tries
to establish woman's identity inside the structure of family defined in terms of familial
relationship. This concept of limited but profound spaces of the novels of shashi
Deshpande have set a direction to new feminine voices in Indian English literatures. Each
novel records a women's journey to self awakening and redfining, reshaping and
restructuring her life.
The present study aims to conceptualize the situation of woman in society elaborated
through works of Deshpande. Divided in Seven Chapters, the study presents a comprehensive
analysis of eight novels of Shashi Deshpande. In critical analysis, besides the paradigms
of feminism- the focus remains to explore a universal pattern of human relationships that
is beyond the rigid configurational coordinates of women's spaces."
